DIY Carpet Cleaning Tips

Are you planning to clean your carpet yourself? If so, you are making a wise decision, as cleaning your carpet yourself is a fantastic way to save a significant amount of money while still extending the life of your carpet. In order to obtain the best results possible it is important to keep these DIY carpet cleaning tips in mind.

Tip # 1: Vacuum Thoroughly
Before you start cleaning the carpet, it is essential that you vacuum the carpet first.  By removing loose dirt, the brushes are able to work more efficiently.

Tip # 2: Pre-Treat Problem Areas
If you have any stains pre-treat the problem area with the appropriate pre-treatment formula.  We have two Rug Doctor products available, Spot Remover for oil based stains and Stain Remover for acid based stains.  See bottle labels for more information or check out our stain guide here.

Tip # 3: Prepare the Room and Furniture
The next step to successfully cleaning your carpet is to prepare the room by moving all of the furniture off the carpet so you have a clear cleaning path.  If you need to place furniture back onto carpet before it is completely dry use tin foil or glad wrap beneath furniture legs until carpet is dry to prevent staining.

Tip # 4: When cleaning with the Rug Doctor machine, walk backwards with the machine at the pace of 2 steps per second.

With these tips you can ensure the best possible results and give your carpet a new lease on life!
