How to Remove Gum from Your Carpet: Expert Methods That Work

If you discover chewing gum stuck in your carpet, it is critical to act quickly before it becomes a permanent, unsightly, sticky mess. You may be tempted to pull the chewing gum off the carpet, but this can damage the carpet fibres and leave behind some sticky pieces of the gum.

Let's explore effective methods for removing chewing gum from your carpet without causing damage.

Freezing the gum

Freezing is one of the most reliable techniques to remove chewing gum from carpet. This method works by hardening the chewing gum, making it less sticky and easier to remove the gum from carpet intact.

Grab an ice pack, or place several ice cubes in a plastic bag and place it over the gum until it hardens, typically taking approximately 1-2 minutes. Once the gum has frozen solid, gently lift it from the edges, working carefully to protect your carpet.

For any stubborn remnants, use a butter knife to scrape away the remaining pieces carefully. Finally, vacuum the affected area to remove loose particles that might have broken off during removal.

Pro Tip: For stubborn pieces, you may need to repeat the freezing process several times to remove gum from your carpet completely. The key is patience—rushing can damage your carpet.

Heating the gum

For situations where freezing isn't practical, controlled heat can help soften chewing gum for easier removal.

Use a hair dryer to warm the gum. When chewing gum begins to soften, you can gently lift it away from the carpet with a plastic bag or a soft cloth. The lifting process should be done slowly after considerable softening to avoid damaging the carpet fibres.

The first attempt may not be adequate, and you should repeat the process until you’ve successfully lifted all the gum from your carpet. If repeating the procedure, wait until the gum hardens before reheating. If your carpet is made of synthetic or woollen material, apply the hot air cautiously to avoid melting the fibres.
