The 4 Most Satisfying Cleaning Jobs For Your Home

Cleaning is one of those things that is oddly satisfying to do. Whether it’s removing small clumps of dust from under your furniture, getting rid of spider webs in the corners of your ceiling or rubbing the dust off your bookshelf; cleaning elevates our mood to a whole new level. We feel better when we’re cleaner and organised and not only this, a clean house and mental health have been shown to be interrelated.

We’ve compiled a list of our top places around the house that you ought to clean, and we promise that it’s not as dull as you think. From a shiny bathtub to a sparkling sink, check out what you didn’t know you’re missing out on and take your spring cleaning (and your mood) to a whole new level.

1.  The Bath

There’s something about reclining in hot water that makes our bodies and minds simultaneously switch off and go into relaxation mode. That feeling of filling the tub with hot water, throwing a bath bomb in and just cherishing those moments of pure bliss. But when the bathtub isn’t clean, you’d rather steer clear of it completely. Seriously, who feels like stepping into a bathtub that has soap scum, stains or mould? The good news is that you can easily remedy this.

It is highly likely that you have either an enamel tub or an acrylic tub. Acrylic tubs are sensitive to abrasive chemicals, so whenever you’re using a cleaner make sure you do a spot test on a small area first. For enamel tubs, the enamel is sensitive to acidic chemicals like vinegar or bleach; so stick to gentle chemicals and soft cleaning tools like sponges.

When you walk into your bathroom in the morning, your bathtub is one of the first things that you’re going to see. So be sure to keep it shiny as new.

2.  Microwave

Remember the time when you read a recipe on the internet but things didn’t quite work out like they should have? And as a result of that, you made a whole lot of mess in the kitchen; including the microwave. But cleaning a microwave oven is really simple and satisfying.

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water and put some chopped up lime or lemon (or 5 tablespoons of vinegar) in it. Place the bowl in the microwave oven for a few minutes, ideally until you start seeing some steam on the window. Then, let it cool down for 15 minutes without opening it. After that, remove the bowl and wipe the interiors of the microwave with a sponge.

That citrus smell of lime and a clean surface will definitely uplift your mood.

3.  Sink

It’s really pleasing to the eye to see a sparkling, shiny sink; but it’s also good for your health because most of your utensils will pass through it. Cleanliness and health go hand-in-hand, so you should always try to keep your sink clean. According to an article by Webmd, your sink can have more bacteria than your toilet. Yikes!

Here’s how you can easily clean your sink and not only make it germ-free but also pleasing to the eye.

  • Wet your sink and sprinkle baking soda all over the surface
  • Line the sink with vinegar soaked paper-towels for 20 minutes

You will have a gleaming sink after this. One more thing that you should consider here is the effectiveness of vinegar as a disinfectant. Keep in mind commercial disinfectants are always more efficient than vinegar; so to ensure a germ-free sink use an antibacterial cleaner once a week also.

4.  Carpet

Raise your hands if you love those “satisfying cleaning videos” on YouTube. It’s just so relaxing to watch “order” emerge from “chaos,” isn’t it? Also, those before/after images are delightful, aren’t they? But carpet stains are one of the most difficult stains to clean. So ideally, you should try to prevent them by proactive planning. Read more about how proactive behaviour can help you keep your carpets clean.

However, if you end up with stains on your carpet, there are some things you should do and some things that you shouldn't do. Below is one of our videos in which we discuss "what NOT to do" with a carpet stain.

Remember that one time you spilled something on your carpet? You wanted to clean it, but... you probably procrastinated. Well, don't worry, all stains can be taken care of if you have the right knowledge. When it comes to carpet stains, there are acidic-based stains and oil-based stains. Have a look at our videos in which we discuss cleaning tips for both - acidic-based stains and oil-based stains

Make sure you click one of those before/after pictures, or better yet, shoot your own “satisfying carpet cleaning video” for YouTube. The carpet cleaning community will love you for it.

WE KNOW IT’S EASIER SAID THAN DONE, BUT NOT ALL CARPET STAINS CAN BE REMOVED EASILY USING HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS.

If you’re dealing with those stubborn stains, Rug Doctor has two stain removal products that are each PH balanced and individually formulated to treat either acidic or oil based stains.

For instance, to get rid of tea and coffee stains you will need the Rug Doctor Stain Remover, but for blood or grease stains you would use the Rug Doctor Spot Remover.
